"I’ve been painting surfers for the past two years now. My wife and I were living in Rockaway at the height of pandemic and our apartment window faced the ocean. We would look out and watch the surfers. My wife was pregnant at the time and everything seemed pretty unpredictable but having the water and the horizon line somehow anchored us. We would go on walks, then I would go for a surf. The tide would change, and we would head back home. Life was a cycle of habitually watching, waiting, and repeating the same process each day.
This repetition translated into the way I started working. I focused on surfers dropping in on waves. Surfers exist in a space between danger and safety. The figures that I paint look effortless as they crouch under slabs of water, they plunge down the plane of the canvas."
Evan Mazellan (born in 1990 in Orange County, CA, and raised in Marion, IN) lives and works in New York City. Mazellan's oil paintings explore injury notions, with mark-making methods traditional to the disciplines of drawing and printmaking and its manifestation in spiritual iconography. Mazellan's depictions simultaneously revel in and call into question the fragile framework of life and death.
